Durham, NC – Durham Public Schools is pleased to announce five leadership appointments. The Board of Education approved the following appointments at its June 23 meeting.
Dr. Sherron Leplin will be the new principal at E.K. Powe Elementary. She has served as a principal in Orange County Schools from 2004-2010. Prior to that, she was an assistant principal in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools from 2000-2004. Leplin has also held multiple central office positions such as Coordinator of Exceptional Education and Student Services, Title IX and 504 District Coordinator with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Coordinator of Safe and Drug Free Schools in Guilford County Schools. Leplin was a school counselor in High Point City Schools for four years and a teacher in the same district for 14 years. Her Bachelor’s degree was earned at Appalachian State University. She earned multiple Master’s degrees along with her Doctorate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
Eastway Elementary will be led by Kendral Flowers. She is currently an assistant principal at Baileywick Elementary in Wake County. Flowers previously served as an assistant principal in Durham Public Schools at Eno Valley Elementary from 2005-2007 and Neal Middle from 2004-2005. She also spent the 2003-2004 school year as an administrative intern at Glenn Elementary. Flowers brings 10 years of teaching experience divided among Durham Public Schools, Guilford Public Schools and the Wake County Public School System. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from North Carolina A&T and two Master’s degrees – one from North Carolina A&T and one from North Carolina Central University.
John Williams has been named principal of Chewning Middle, where he is currently an assistant principal. He has also served as an assistant principal at Riverside High from 2008-2010 and Greene Central High in Snow Hill, North Carolina from 2003-2007. Williams spent 21 years in the United States Air Force, retiring as a Senior Master Sergeant, and has seven years of experience as a mental health counselor. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland and Master’s degrees from Troy State University and East Carolina University.
Jim Key, current principal of Chewning Middle, has been named Area Superintendent of High School Curriculum & Instruction and School Improvement. Key is a long-time principal in Durham Public Schools. In addition to leading Chewning Middle, he has also served as principal at Riverside High from 2004-2010, Carrington Middle from 2001-2004 and Eno Valley Elementary from 1999-2001. He also was an assistant principal at Carrington Middle from 1998-1999 and Riverside High from 1994-1997. Key was a Social Studies teacher for 11 years at four different DPS schools. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He graduated from Officer’s Candidate School at Fort Bragg in 1988.
At the June 13 meeting, the Board of Education approved John R. McCain as principal of Southwest Elementary. McCain comes to Durham Public Schools from Person County Schools where he has served as principal of Southern Middle School since 2007. He also teaches college reading at Piedmont Community College in Roxboro, North Carolina. Prior to becoming a principal, McCain worked as an assistant principal at Southern Middle School from 2005-2007 and as an elementary teacher at South Elementary in Mebane, North Carolina from 1994-2005. McCain earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Winston-Salem State University and his Master’s degree from North Carolina A&T State University.
