DURHAM—The teachers and principals are in place, classrooms are decorated and buses are ready to roll. Durham Public Schools’ five year-round schools are ready to open Monday, July 19, and school officials want to remind year-round parents to be ready, too.
Approximately 3,300 students are expected to arrive Monday morning at Easley, Holt and Pearsontown Elementary and Chewning and Rogers-Herr Middle Schools for the first day of school. Superintendent Dr. Eric J. Becoats announced today that the district is ready to welcome them.
“We want our parents and the community to know that we are excited and ready for a great first day of school,” said Becoats. “Our teachers are in place and putting the final touches on our classrooms, and our fantastic transportation, maintenance and child nutrition professionals are ready to ensure that everyone experiences a smooth start on Day One.”
Members of the Superintendent’s Central Services team reiterated that all systems are go. Classroom teachers have been assigned, including the rehiring of a number who were previously laid off but were able to return due to the Durham County Commissioners and NC legislators’ support of public schools.
School inspections have been completed, and buses will be rolling Monday morning. Officials reminded the community to be on the lookout during their morning commute for buses and students who will be waiting at bus stops.
Parents will want to check out DPS’ SmoothStart Website for information on open houses, calendars, the student handbook and much more.
