DPS announces principal of new elementary school

August 28, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Hank Hurd, Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services 560-2504 DURHAM—Gretta M. Dula, Principal of Riverside Elementary Magnet School in Franklin County Schools, has been appointed Principal of Durham Public Schools’ newest elementary school, slated to open in August 2004. She will spend the next several months planning for the school’s opening. Dula has served as principal of Franklin County’s Riverside since May 2001. Prior to that she was Assistant Principal of Oak Grove Elementary School in the Wake County Public School System for five years. She also taught at the elementary level in Wake County for six years. Riverside was Franklin County’s first magnet school, and Dula was key in planning and organizing its opening. She was responsible for all aspects of opening a new school, including hiring staff members, establishing a budget and developing the curriculum. “Having done so, I know that opening a new school is a special and welcome challenge for a professional educator, and I cannot wait to begin the process in Durham,” said Dula. “This is a wonderful opportunity, and I look forward to meeting and working with our new school’s students, parents, teachers and community supporters.” Dula earned an M.A. degree in Educational Administration and a B.A. in Elementary Education/Middle Grades from North Carolina Central University. She is a graduate of the Principal Executive Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was named Franklin County Schools’ Principal of the Year in 2002-03. “Gretta Dula offers energy, enthusiasm and experience in her position as principal of Durham Public Schools’ newest elementary school,” said Superintendent Ann Denlinger. “She is the perfect candidate to bring together all the crucial elements that are required in a successful inaugural year.” ###
