Chambers is new Southwest Elementary School principal

August 26, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Rodney Nelson, Assistant Superintendent Human Resource Services, 560-2353 Chambers is new Southwest Elementary School principal DURHAM—Sandy B. Chambers, former Assistant Principal and current Interim Principal of Southwest Elementary School, has been named Principal of the school. She replaces David Sneed, who was recently named Executive Director of Middle Schools for Durham Public Schools. Chambers has served as assistant principal at Southwest since 2001. Prior to her service there she was a Reading Recovery and Literacy teacher at Southwest for two years and at Parkwood Elementary School for one year, and she was a first-grade teacher for three years at Forest View Elementary School. Prior to becoming an educator, Chambers was Assistant Varsity Cheerleading Coach for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for seven years. “Continuing my association at Southwest Elementary School as principal is a thrilling and very welcome opportunity for me,” said Chambers. “I look forward to extending the fantastic work that the Southwest students, teachers, parents and community supporters started under Mr. Sneed’s leadership.” Chambers, a Durham native, attended Pearsontown Elementary School and Lowe’ s Grove Middle (formerly Junior High) School, and is a 1989 graduate of Jordan High School. Chambers is a candidate for a Doctorate of Education degree from UNC. She also holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees in elementary education from North Carolina Central University, along with a bachelor’s degree in Speech Communication from UNC. “The Southwest Elementary School parents and community will enjoy a very smooth transition under the solid leadership of Sandy Chambers,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “She has a firm handle on the school’s mission, and her years as teacher and administrator there have well prepared her for her new role.”
