Career Durham educator will lead Merrick-Moore Elementary School

DURHAM—Gregory McKnight, Assistant Principal of Bethesda Elementary School, has been appointed Principal of Merrick-Moore Elementary School.  He replaces Kathy Kirkpatrick, who was recently named principal of Lowe’s Grove Middle School.

McKnight has spent his entire career as an educator in Durham Public Schools. He has served as assistant principal at Bethesda for the last two years. Before that, he was an administrative intern at Durham School of the Arts for one year.

He was a sixth-grade teacher at Lowe’s Grove for four years, having taught both language arts and social studies. He also was a technology facilitator at Rogers-Herr Middle School for the previous four years.

“I am honored and extremely excited about being named principal of Merrick-Moore Elementary,” said McKnight. “I look forward to collaborating with the faculty, students, parents and community as we focus on discovering innovative ways to increase student achievement.”

McKnight holds a master’s degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a bachelor’s degree in Middle School Social Studies and Language Arts from North Carolina Central University.

“Gregory McKnight has gained invaluable experience in his role as a teacher and administrator,” said Superintendent Carl E. Harris. “Merrick-Moore was a High Growth school in 2007-08, and we look forward to Gregory’s continuation of the great work going on there among students, teachers and parents.”
