Burton interim principal is named to the position permanently

April 24, 2003 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Calvin Dobbins, Associate Superintendent Administrative Services, 560-3736DURHAM--Evelyn S. Slappy, interim principal of Burton Geo-World Magnet Elementary School, has been named permanent principal of the school. She has been interim principal since December 2002. Slappy has been a public educator in Durham for more than 30 years. She previously taught at Oak Grove, Merrick-Moore, Bethesda, Morehead Montessori and Holt Elementary Schools between 1971 and 1998. In 1998, she served as a principal intern at Holt. She was named assistant principal at Eastway Elementary School in March 2000. "The students, teachers, parents and community supporters of Burton Geo-World Magnet Elementary School have been wonderful, and I couldn’t be happier to be named their principal," said Slappy. "We have many imaginative plans in place. I look forward, with great anticipation, to many successes for our students." Slappy holds a master’s degree in school administration from Fayetteville State University, a master’s degree in elementary education from North Carolina Central University, certification in Reading Recovery from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, certification in learning disabilities from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from St. Paul’s College. "Evelyn Slappy’s focus on early literacy combined with her immense enthusiasm for young children make her well qualified to continue her leadership role at Burton Geo-World Magnet School," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "She is an expert in Reading Recovery and elementary curriculum. Her wealth of experience and true dedication will work well to ensure increased student achievement at Burton." ###
