Bring a book, get a free bagel to support reading in DPS
April 7, 2011
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
DURHAM—Bruegger’s Bagels and Durham Public Schools are working together to ensure that children read over the summer. Bruegger’s has partnered with DPS to support the district’s BookMark project.
Bruegger’s is offering a free bagel to any customer who donates a book suitable for an elementary student for the BookMark project.
BookMark is a DPS initiative designed to place new or gently used books in the hands of elementary students throughout DPS. Studies show that children lose up to three months of what they learned the previous year over the summer and reading levels decrease up to 25 percent. Research also has demonstrated that the “summer slide” can be avoided simply by having children read four books over the summer. DPS wants to give books to children who may not have books in the home or easy access to the Public Library.
Bring in a new or gently used book, and Bruegger’s will provide you with a freshly baked bagel of your choice topped with cream cheese. The promotion will be offered at Durham locations on Ninth Street and Commons at University Place until May 1.
In addition, The Regulator Bookstore on Ninth Street is offering a 20 percent discount on all BookMark purchases. For more information, visit the store or www.RegulatorBookshop.com. You may also see the DPS Wish List at www.Amazon.com. For more information on the BookMark Project, visit http://www.dpsnc.net/bookmark.
