DURHAM—Bruegger’s Bagels and Durham Public Schools are working together to ensure that children read over the summer. Bruegger’s has partnered with DPS to support the school district’s BookMark project.
Bruegger’s is offering a free bagel to any customer who donates a book suitable for an elementary student to the BookMark project in honor of National Book Month.
BookMark is a DPS initiative designed to place new or gently used books in the hands of elementary students throughout DPS. Studies show that children lose up to three months of what they learned the previous year over the summer, and reading levels decrease up to 25 percent.
Research also has demonstrated that this can be avoided simply by having children read four books over the summer. DPS wants to give books to children who may not have books in the home or easy access to the Public Library.
Bring in a new or gently used book, and Bruegger’s will provide you with a freshly baked bagel of your choice topped with cream cheese. The promotion will be offered at Durham locations on Ninth Street and Commons at University Place until January 31.
In addition, The Regulator Bookstore on Ninth Street offers a 20 percent discount on all BookMark purchases. Visit the store or check out their Web site, www.RegulatorBookshop.com. Also visit www.Amazon.com to view Durham Public Schools Wishlist.
Visit Bruegger’s this January to do your part to help Durham Public Schools reach its BookMark goal of 10,000 children’s books collected during the 2009-10 academic year.
