DURHAM--Christopher J. Bennett, Assistant Principal of Carrington Middle School, has been named Principal of Durham School of the Arts. He will replace Edward Forsythe, who will retire at the end of the current school year.
Bennett, who has served in his current capacity since August 2001, was assistant principal at DSA for a year prior to going to Carrington. He had also served as a teacher at DSA. Before coming to Durham Public Schools he taught at the high school level in the Alamance-Burlington, Guilford County and Reidsville City School Systems.
"Coming back to Durham School of the Arts as its principal is the realization of a landmark goal in my career as an educator," said Bennett. "To assume Mr. Forsythe’s position is a true honor, as I learned so much under his supervision. I cannot wait to work closely once again with the dedicated students, staff and families that make DSA such an extraordinary place to be."
Bennett holds a Master of Arts degree in School Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, along with a B.A. in Industrial Relations from UNC-Chapel Hill. He received the North Carolina Administrative License in 2001, and is a former Teacher of the Year.
"Chris Bennett has a solid and well-rounded record as an educator and administrator," said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. "He is highly regarded among his colleagues, and at the School of the Arts, where his leadership will ensure the continued successes of the school and its students."
