Parker will compete for 2012 Wells Fargo NC Principal of the Year

Durham, NC – Barbara Parker, principal of Spring Valley Elementary, has been selected as the 2012 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year for Durham Public Schools in a program sponsored by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction and Wells Fargo.

Parker now moves on to compete with other local award recipients from the North Central Region of the state.  After the state selection process is completed, one principal will be selected as the 2012 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year.

Since 1979, Barbara Parker has been a respected educator in Durham Public Schools. She was a long-time special education teacher at Southern High before moving into administrative roles. She served as an assistant principal at Bethesda Elementary and Carrington Middle. Parker also spent ten years as principal of R.N. Harris Elementary. In 2010, she was named principal of Spring Valley Elementary. In her time at Spring Valley, the school received the first place Leadership Excellence Award for achieving the highest percentage of scorecard growth goals. Additionally, the school received the Leadership Improvement Award for most improvement in meeting goals from 2009-10 to 2010-11.

This is the 29th year Wells Fargo has sponsored the financial awards.  LEA principals of the year receive a cash award. The regional Wells Fargo Principals of the Year receive a cash award for their school and a cash award for personal use.  The 2012 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year will receive $3,000 for his or her school and $3,000 for his or her personal use.

Regional award recipients will be selected by February 2012 and the 2012 State Wells Fargo Principal of the Year will be announced in spring of 2012 at a state event in Raleigh. The 2011 Wells Fargo Principal of the Year is Rob Jackson, principal of Cuthbertson High School in Union County.
