Award-winning DPS principal will lead Southern High School

DURHAM—Kenneth E. Barnes, Principal of Shepard Middle School, has been named Principal of Southern High School.  He will replace Rod Teal, who has been appointed Principal of Fayetteville Street Elementary School, replacing Principal Queen Bass Scarborough who is retiring.

Barnes has been principal of Shepard since 2005.  He was recently named the North Carolina Middle School Association’s Region 3 Administrator of the Year. Last year, Shepard was named a School to Watch by the National Forum to Accelerate Middle-Grades Reform.

Before coming to Shepard, Barnes was Principal of Cleveland Middle School in the Johnston County School System.  He previously had served as an Assistant Principal at Hillside High School in Durham and Assistant Principal at Rogers-Herr Middle School.  He also taught at Riverside High School, and at Shepard and Neal Middle Schools.

In addition to teaching secondary level mathematics, Barnes also has served as a team leader for teachers and as a football and track coach.  He has received additional training through the completion of the Principals Executive and Facilitative Leadership Training programs.

“I look forward to working together with the students, teachers and parents of Southern High School to discover innovative ways for increasing student achievement,” said Barnes. “This is a great opportunity and a welcome challenge for me.”

Barnes earned both a master’s degree in school administration and a bachelor’s in business administration from North Carolina Central University. He is currently a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership at North Carolina State University.

“Kenneth Barnes is a seasoned and lauded school administrator who offers the Southern High School community a broad and experienced perspective around secondary instruction,” said Superintendent Carl E. Harris. “We will see great things emerge from his proven and ongoing commitment to high standards and from his vision for helping Southern students reach their fullest potential.”
