2005 SAT score average is highest ever for DPS
The average score is four points above last year’s average of 1001. There now have been four consecutive years of increases in the average SAT score in Durham Public Schools.
Highlights of this year’s SAT results include:
- Double-digit increases in average SAT scores at three high schools: Northern High School showed the highest jump, of 20 points (from 959 to 979). Jordan High School seniors posted that school’s highest-ever average of 1103, up 16 points from last year’s 1087. Riverside students scored an average 1033, up 12 points from last year’s 1021.
- Three high schools scored above the state average of 1010, and above the national average of 1028 (Durham School of the Arts at 1054, and Jordan and Riverside).
- Hispanic students’ average SAT scores showed an impressive gain of 32 points, from 972 to 1004. This is 44 points above the state average of 960 for Hispanic students, and 76 points above the national average of 922.
- African-American seniors realized a two-point increase, from 866 to 868, 17 points above the state average of 851 for their counterparts, and four points above the national average of 864.
- White students in Durham Public Schools showed a 29-point increase, 1103 to 1132, which is 71 points above the state average of 1061 for white students, and 64 points above the national average of 1068.
The SAT is typically used for college admission information. The test is divided into verbal and mathematics sections worth 800 points each, with the highest possible combined score being 1600.
“Four consecutive years of a continued upward trend in Durham Public Schools’ average SAT score is a solid indication of success we are realizing as a result of the improvements we are making in our high schools,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “In the coming year we will accelerate our focus at this level, with greater technological support for our teachers combined with the ongoing increase of specialized instructional options we offer our high school students. This is a testament to the hard work of our high school students, teachers, principals, Central Services team and community supporters.”
