Wake administrator tapped to lead Pearson

Koop, an Assistant Principal in the Wake County Public School System, has been named Principal of W.G. Pearson Elementary School. He replaces Emmett Tilley, who is now Principal of Githens Middle School. Koop has served as Assistant Principal at Wilburn Year-Round Elementary School in Raleigh for the past two years. Prior to his service there he was Assistant Principal of Lakeview School in Durham for two years. He is a former “cross-categorical” resource teacher, serving students with special needs at two magnet schools in Raleigh over a nine-year period. “I am looking forward to working with the W.G. Pearson school community to ensure that their students continue to make tremendous gains in all academic areas,” said Koop. “This is a goal that is certainly attainable, and one which can be accomplished with hard work and dedication among the students and staff members at Pearson.” Koop holds two master’s degrees, one in school administration from Fayetteville State University, the other in education with an emphasis in special education from North Carolina State University. He also holds a bachelor’s degree in education from N.C. State. “George Koop has a wealth of experience in successfully increasing student achievement levels among diverse student populations. He believes in setting high standards while providing the support to help students achieve them,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “The Pearson students, teachers, staff members, parents and community supporters have much to which they can look forward under his leadership.” ###
