Jordan High School senior is N.C. State Park Scholar

DURHAM—Jordan High School senior Elisabeth Nifong has been named a Park Scholar by North Carolina State University. The Park Scholarships program is among America's most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarship programs. The $48,000 scholarship pays all expenses for four years of study at N.C. State and includes a stipend for each student to purchase a personal computer and peripherals. Elisabeth is one of only 46 students from across the country to be named a Park Scholar. “I am so excited to receive the Park Scholarship,” said Elisabeth. “It will be such a great opportunity to attend State and have so many options and programs available.” Selection criteria for the merit-based Park Scholarships include academic achievement, personal characteristics such as integrity and motivation, exceptional leadership potential and commitment to the betterment of one's community. Elisabeth currently has a 4.98 grade point average and has taken seven Advanced Placement courses, along with band, for all four years in high school. She is Co-Captain of the Winter Guard, Treasurer of the National Honor Society and serves on the finance committee of Durham’s Youth Leadership Team. She has also volunteered with the West End Community housing project; the North Carolina Adopt-a-Highway Program, and was a member of the Hurricane Floyd response mission team at a local church. She is considering Animal Science as a major course of study. “Elisabeth Nifong is a wonderful example of just how much students can achieve when setting goals for themselves and dedicating themselves to high standards and serving others,” said Superintendent Ann T. Denlinger. “We are extremely proud of Elisabeth, and share our excitement with her family, friends, principal and teachers.” ###
