4 DPS Teachers Chosen as Kenan Fellows

DURHAM—Four teachers from Durham Public Schools have been named Kenan Fellows, a prestigious designation given by the Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development at North Carolina State University.
Michael Belcher of Hillside New Tech High School, Ronda Bullock of Hillside High School, Sarah Kaneko of Jordan High School and Kent Lewis of Durham School of the Arts have been selected by the highly regarded program.
Four is a record number of teachers to be selected as Kenan Fellows in one year. Belcher is the fourth teacher from Hillside New Tech High to receive the honor.
Teachers are selected for the two-year fellowship to study very specific areas in the fields of math or science. They are given mentors from area universities or other research institutions and their research is sponsored by local businesses, corporations or foundations.
The DPS projects are as follows:
- Belcher - How Big and Small Animals Swim, Fly, and Pump Fluids. Sponsor: Statistical and -Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute (SAMSI)
- Bullock - Biotech Drug Innovation, Sponsor: Biogen Idec
- Kaneko - Bioprocessing and Biomanufacturing, Sponsor: Biomanufacturing Training and
Education Center (BTEC)
- Lewis - US Department of Energy Fellow, Sponsor: US Department of Energy, Goodnight Educational Foundation
The Kenan Fellows Program for Curriculum and Leadership Development is a competitive two-year fellowship offered to K-12 public school teachers. Its mission is to enhance curriculum relevance for the benefit of all students; engage teachers, business, and universities through unique professional collaboration; and promote growth opportunities for teachers and the teaching profession.
