The North Carolina Central University (NCCU) Art Museum presents “Durham's Finest,” an exhibition of outstanding student artwork from Durham Public Schools (DPS) from January 22-February 10, 2012. In this select show, four two-dimensional pieces of art represent each of the schools, plus three-dimensional artwork is also featured. This unique show is the school system’s only district-wide art exhibit and shows the progression and artistic development of the students from kindergarten through high school. By hosting the exhibit, NCCU Art Museum gives the students the rare opportunity to see their artwork in a real museum setting.

The opening floating reception is Sunday, January 22, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. for the student artists, their families, friends, art teachers, school officials, and board members from both DPS and NCCU.  Welcoming remarks and the announcement of the three ‘Purchase Awards’ will be made throughout the afternoon by Kenneth Rodgers, Director of the NCCU Art Museum, and Mary Casey, Director of K-12 Arts Education for DPS. A string quartet from Jordan High School, under the direction of Wendy Davidson, will perform. Refreshments will be served. The reception is free and open to the public.

After the reception, “Durham’s Finest” can be viewed until February 10 during the museum's regular operating schedule: Tuesday - Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sunday, 2–4 p.m.  The museum is closed weekends, Mondays and university holidays.  Group visits may be arranged (530-5079 or krodgers@nccu.edu).
