2 Hillside seniors receive Duke scholarships

DURHAM - Two seniors from Hillside High School have received major scholarships to attend Duke University. Senior Charisse Phillips has received a scholarship totaling $98,000 over four years, and her classmate Jaymeson Morris has received one totaling nearly $84,000. The scholarships are based on need combined with academic performance and leadership. "I'm very excited," said Charisse; My goal is to influence other young females to achieve their goals and to find the support necessary to succeed. I attribute my success to the support I have received from my family and my peers. I'ts always been a dream of mine to go to Duke," said Jaymeson. "I hope I can glean something useful for my life from it." Charisse ranks third in her class and has a 4.76 grade point average. She is president of the student council and is a member of the National Honor Society and the Mu Alpha Theta Math Club and has been on the varsity track team all four years at Hillside. She volunteers with the Durham Homeless Shelter and serves as a mentor through the Women in Action group at Greater St. Paul's Missionary Baptist Church. She takes courses in the International Baccalaureate Program at Hillside. Jaymeson is the senior class valedictorian, with a GPA of 5.2. He has been a member of the school's varsity soccer team all four years and is a member of the Hornets in Harmony show choir. He is a National Merit Finalist and studied English at Governor's School last summer. He sings at local events and volunteers with the Durham Chorale. Jaymeson plans to study linguistics at Duke.
