Future health care professionals surround a master at the City of Medicine Academy on September 30.  Dr. Victor Dzau, CEO of Duke University Health Systems paid a visit to the brand-new school for a tour both to witness some of the innovative activities going on there and to inspire the students who attend.

CMA Principal Elizabeth Shearer and the students hosted Dr. Dzau and other dignitaries, including MaryAnn Black, also of Duke Health Systems, Tony Habit of the New Schools Project, which helps support the school, and several parent leaders and members of the Durham Public Schools Board of Education.

The City of Medicine Academy opened in Signature Commons August 25.  CMA is an academically rigorous high school that contributes to educating future health-care professionals in preparation for meeting the ever-growing health-care needs of the community. Students graduating from the Academy are prepared for post-secondary health-care education or to enter the health-care workforce.

The school’s current location on Roxboro Road places it in close proximity to Durham Regional Hospital, where students can take advantage of job-shadowing and internship opportunities. A new facility for the school will open on the hospital’s campus in the fall of 2011.
