Durham Performance Learning Center Receives $20,000 from Verizon for STEM Technology
On October 12 Verizon presented a $20,000 Verizon STEM PLUS Grant to Communities in Schools of Durham that will be used at the Durham Performance Learning Center (DPLC) to purchase iPads for the staff and students. The iPads will help increase student engagement with learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills.
Students will use the new technology for math related games and other STEM apps as well as to help build small robots, use scientific probes and sensors with the TI-84 calculators and laptop computer, and participate in job shadowing and internships with teach companies. They will also take part in the Be Real Game, an interactive teacher-student game that provides the framework for career and life exploration. Teachers will be trained to use the iPads in the classroom and will use www.thinkfinity.org for individualized staff development and online learning resources to implement in class.
