DPS Superintendent Eric Becoats takes helm

Durham Public Schools welcomes Dr. Eric J. Becoats, who was sworn in as Superintendent of Durham Public Schools the morning of July 1 at Joe’s Diner near downtown Durham.  Dr. Becoats is shaking hands with the Honorable Elaine Bushfan immediately after taking the Oath of Office.  Also pictured, from left, are Dr. Becoats’ son Braxton, who will attend Hillside High School next month, and Dr. Becoats’ mother Evelyn.

A breakfast sponsored by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) was held at the diner.  In attendance were Board of Education members and a number of city and county elected officials and other dignitaries.

After the ceremony and breakfast Dr. Becoats immediately got down to business with plans to visit several schools. First off was a visit to a 21st Century Learning Center Summer Camp at Fayetteville Street Elementary School, then to Northern High School to meet with students in a summer leadership program. After lunching with a number of principals, Dr. Becoats was slated to visit the Restoration Institute for Leaders dropout prevention program at Southern High.

Wrapping up his first day – his first official Board of Education meeting, with the swearing in of new members Natalie Beyer and Nancy Cox and re-elected members Rev. Fredrick Davis and Omega Curtis-Parker.
