Chef Jay Christmas visits students at Hope Valley Elementary

Students get a lesson on healthy cooking

Kindergarten and Second Grade students at Hope Valley Elementary got a special lesson on healthy eating Monday.  The students were visited by Chef Jay Christmas, Executive Chef at Hope Valley Country Club.  Chef Christmas demonstrated a tasty and simple way kids can enjoy vegetables by making succotash for the students and teachers to taste. Chef Christmas also answered questions from the group while they watched him cook.

For many of the students, it was their first time seeing a professional chef in action.  Chef Christmas’ visit was part of the Chefs Move to Schools program, an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move campaign which strives to end childhood obesity.

Chef Christmas has been a part of the Chefs Move to Schools program since its inception in 2010.  He says part of his goal is to show students that there is more to food than chicken nuggets and French fries.  He says he also wants parents and kids to know that there are fun and easy ways to prepare vegetables that make them delicious and healthy.
