Carr Building Reopens
Durham Public Schools this fall is celebrating the reopening of the renovated and refurbished Julian S. Carr Building at Durham School of the Arts.
The $14.9 million renovation of the historic building – first opened in 1926 as Central Junior High School – has been underway for two years. Its completion has created a 21st century school facility lodged within a largely conserved early 20th-century building.
The renovated Carr building will house general instruction classrooms and other facilities for sixth and seventh grades and art and drama spaces for grades six through 12. The new facilities include two large art labs, a woodshop for drama and theater, two drama classrooms, a costume shop and costume storage area, a 3,700-square-foot dance studio and two science labs. A new third-floor dining area has two serving lines and can seat 210 students and staff.
DPS and DSA celebrated the reopening with an open house and program Saturday, Sept. 10.
