Kitchen Table Conversation Focuses on Kindergarten Transition

Kitchen Table: Kindergarten Transition

For the last three years, Durham Public Schools has held Kitchen Table Conversations as a way to engage parents, staff and community stakeholders in discussion about particular topics.  On April 23, there was a new twist to the activity.  The Kitchen Table event was co-sponsored with another agency.

DPS and Durham’s Partnership for Children are collaborating on a Transition to Kindergarten plan to foster a smooth transition for children and families from early childhood into kindergarten.  So it was a natural fit for the two agencies to collaborate on a Kitchen Table Conversation on the topic “Making the Transition from Childcare to Kindergarten.”

Approximately 40 early childhood and elementary educators, parents and others attended the event held at W.G. Pearson Magnet Elementary School.  Discussion centered on questions regarding what’s working in the transition, what are the challenges and what educators and parents can do to promote smooth transitions.

Some of the ideas suggested including recognition of the need for community partnerships and outreach, holding kindergarten meetings for parents, the importance of More at Four and other pre-K programs, improved communications and rallying around higher quality programming.
