From the Superintendent

Supt Message Comm EdLink 10.09

More than one month into our school year and things are very busy!  There already have been several key activities that let us know how much support we have from our community.

The Superintendent’s Business Advisory Council honored our hardworking and dedicated principals and assistant principals at the second annual Leadership Awards event.  Local business partners contributed funding for professional development to the winners, and the honored principals were treated to a stay at the beautiful Washington Duke Inn.

The schools to receive honors were those that showed the most growth as measured on School Scorecards of performance.  You can check out a detailed report – the first annual DPS State of the System Performance Report – to see how the district fared in 15 different performance areas.  We are showing improvement in many of these areas and we have an increasingly clear picture regarding where more work is needed.

Nearly 200 attendees – many of them community members – turned out for the first DPS Board of Education Kitchen Table Conversation of this school year.  The topic was the all-important effort to close the achievement gap.  Some very substantive material came from this meeting and will be included in a $1.5 million national grant proposal.

It is always a pleasure to meet with our good friends from the Durham Regional Association of Realtors, and this year was no exception.  Thank you for a warm welcome and the opportunity to share our progress with you.  Joining me in this photo is DRAR President D.J. Maniace.

In the face of our recent budget challenges my optimism concerning this school year grows by the day.  With supporters like you, how could I be wrong?
