From the Interim Superintendent

From Int Supt - CommEdLk 5.10

This is the last Community EdLink for this school year, and my last to you as interim superintendent.  It has been a joy working with our incredibly supportive businesses and community organizations, and I will miss it – and all the great people I have met in this role.

We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Eric J. Becoats as the new Superintendent of Durham Public Schools.  He comes to us from Guilford County Schools where he is Chief Administrative Officer. I know that you will enjoy meeting and working with him.

One group that I know Dr. Becoats will embrace wholeheartedly is our wonderful Business Advisory Council.  We had another very successful meeting on April 13, and our fantastic and creative members expressed excitement around working with our new leader and making plans for the coming school year.

Another highly supportive group of leaders is our Legislative delegation.  With the tough budget season we are in the process of wrapping up, it is so good to know that our local representatives and state senators are doing everything they can to get us through these challenging times.

Ninety-plus degree weather can only mean one thing.  Graduation is around the corner!  Please check the graduation schedule to make sure you don’t miss all the pomp and circumstance for 2010.

A new staple of our graduation season is the culmination of our great BookMark program.  We’re going to have thousands of books to give to elementary kids – donated by both DPS high school students and private and corporate citizens – take a moment to read our BookMark update.

Please check out the Triangle Corporate Battle of the Bands coming up on May 15.  You’ll have a great time, plus you’ll help out a new partnership with The Hill Center to benefit students in after-school programs.  Special thanks to McKinney for organizing this great event.

My tenure with Durham Public Schools, and especially the last six months as interim superintendent, has been challenging yet satisfying.  This has been made possible through the constant support and encouragement that our business and community supporters provide. Thank you again for everything you do for Durham’s children, and it is my hope our paths will again cross.
