Durham Named in Top 100

Durham named one of nation’s 100 best communities for young people

America’s Promise Alliance is the nation’s largest partnership organization dedicated to youth and children. The Alliance, in a competition presented by ING, recently recognized the 100 communities that make youth a priority by implementing programs that help keep children in school and prepare them for college and the 21st century workforce.

Durham was awarded a spot on the list for the second time. Marguerite Kondracke, President and CEO of America’s Promise Alliance, commented, “Through its innovative and far-reaching programs, Durham is taking bold and effective steps to help their young people graduate and lead healthy, productive lives.”

But what does this recognition mean for Durham Public Schools?

When notified of the award, Superintendent Eric Becoats stated, “While it is an honor for Durham to be included in the Top 100 list, I see a very important lesson here. Our community is ripe for a world class school district. We cannot – and will not – settle for less. All the pieces are in place and I, for one, believe we are now on the clock in our march to excellence.”
