My lesson for the day: Schools here in Guatemala that have government support provide a much higher quality of service than the free ones for poor children that depend totally on volunteer support and random donations. Today I visited a pre-school for children of single mothers, less than a half-hour from Antigua.

Today we met at La Union (school) at 6:00 am and left for San Francisco (Guatemala) to climb Volcan Pacaya. As we drove, we passed lots of people waiting on the side of the road to be picked up by "chicken buses" (renovated school buses that serve as their public transportation system) to get to work. There also were children in school uniforms walking or waiting for chicken buses to take them to school. The ride to San Francisco took an hour and a half.

Each member of the trip has his or her own personal Spanish tutor, working with them at their level. Classes take place over little wooden tables in an historic, two -story building with a patio and fountain, located in the heart of Antigua. Tutorials last from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., with a half-hour break to enjoy a good coffee or sweet from one of the many cafes or bakeries nearby.

Today I visited a rural school for indigenous children in the town of Santa Maria de Jesus. The name is Jardin de Amor, or "Garden of Love.: There are 45 students, three classrooms (one is 6' x 12' and the other 10' x 20') and two teachers. The classes run from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Another 30 children attend from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. There are children ages 5 to 12 in the same class. They are grouped by learning level. There was a fairly balanced mix of boys and girls.
