What better way to let teachers know how much you appreciate them than by simply telling them? Durham Public Schools will provide a quick and easy way to do just that.

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 1-7, and during that week and the preceding week (starting April 25), parents and community supporters will have the opportunity to send an email to the special teacher or teachers they wish to thank for the hard work and dedication they put into the classroom.

Teachers truly are the heart of the success Durham Public Schools has experienced over the last several years. Please take a minute to remind them of our appreciation for their commitment to students. The email appreciation link will be on the web until May 9.

BookMark is a DPS initiative designed to place new or gently used books in the hands of elementary children who may not have books in the home or easy access to the Public Library. Studies show that children lose up to three months of what they learned the previous year over the summer, and reading levels decrease up to 25 percent.

Durham Public Schools has been working hard with its community partners to make the BookMark program a success again this year.

Bruegger’s Bagels has a unique promotion to collect books for the BookMark project. Any customer who donates a book for BookMark receives a free bagel with cream cheese. The promotion runs through May 1.

Urban Durham Realty will hold a community book drive again this year on May 14 from 10-12 noon at their office at 401C Foster Street.

Check out the impressive list of organizations that are collecting books or making donations to BookMark:

DPS high schools are also a major part of the BookMark effort. Last year high schools collected more than 3,000 books and school book drives are underway.

There’s still time to get involved, so please visit our BookMark Web site, http://bookmark.dpsnc.net/.
