BookMark Project

Did you know that each summer, months of education are lost?  Studies show that when children do not read over the summer, they enter the next school year behind grade level.  Up to three months of education can be lost each summer, and students' reading level can decrease by up to 25 percent.

This can all be prevented by reading four books over each summer.  Research indicates that students who read four books over the summer not only prevent the summer slide, but actually can enter the next school year above grade level.

The BookMark project is a new Durham Public Schools’ initiative to place books in the hands of elementary-aged children who may not have access to children’s books in their home.  New or gently used books may be donated to DPS.  Books are given directly to students, not to school libraries.  Schools with 75 percent or more students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunches will receive the books, and media coordinators will distribute them to students.

It is easy for anyone to get involved in this project!  You can help with the summer education slide by donating new or gently used elementary level books to Durham Public Schools.  You can buy new books online at www.RegulatorBookshop.com or through the Durham Public Schools Wishlist at www.Amazon.com and have them shipped to the address given.  If you wish to donate gently used books, you can drop them off at any high school media center, the DPS Staff Development Center at 2107 Hillandale Road, or the Fuller Building at 511 Cleveland Street.

We encourage businesses in the community to get involved and help stop the summer slide.  For more information, visit our BookMark page.
