From DPS to Dreams Fulfilled
It’s hard to tell “Where in the World” 1997 Southern High School graduate David Garrard is on any given day. His commitment to academics and athletics as a DPS student in the 1990s paved the way to his now being all over the place, as a starting quarterback for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars.
Garrard credits the support he received while at DPS with his ability to continue to pursue success through major obstacles. While playing for Southern High, Garrard was voted best quarterback in the state of North Carolina. Caring coaches, teachers, family members and others in his community, saw him through the death of his mother when he was in ninth grade and a serious illness that he faced later on.
This strong support led to a successful college career, both on and off the field, at East Carolina University. After graduating in 2001, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, for whom he is now the starting quarterback.
