The Great American Bird Count

First-graders at Parkwood Elementary are studying organisms and habitats, learning about what kinds of animals and plants live in different areas of the world and why. A local biologist visited Parkwood students earlier this year to describe for students different species of birds and how to identify them by size, color and bird calls.

As part of their study, students are now taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count. This is an educational program sponsored by the Audubon Society. Teachers and volunteers took students on a walk through a wooded area adjacent to Parkwood. Their job was to identify the birds they saw and record them.

The data will be tracked and sent to the Great Backyard Bird Count. The exercise was a great way for students to learn more about the study of science, the environment and how to conduct research.
