Redefining Futures for African-American Males
Nearly 200 Durham Public Schools parents, students, teachers and community supporters turned out for the Durham Public Schools Board of Education’s most recent Kitchen Table Conversation on Tuesday, September 15. The topic was Redefining Futures: Achieving Academic Success for All African-American Males.
This Kitchen Table Conversation was co-hosted by the Durham Association of Educators (DAE) who is developing in partnership with DPS a proposal for a National Educators Association Foundation grant to improve academic success for African-American males in selected schools. African-American males have been identified as the group most in need of support to improve academic success.
If funded, the $1.5 million grant would implement strategies for closing achievement gaps among African-American males and other students. Tuesday’s participants worked together to craft lists of concerns and solutions for addressing how to better serve this population. The lists of suggestions will be submitted to the grant committee for inclusion in the proposal.
