The Durham Public Schools Scholarship Foundation (DPSSF) and Durham Public Schools (DPS) collaborated to produce the 2011 annual “An Evening of Entertainment” at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC) on Thursday, February 17, 2011. The Durham Merchants Association Charitable Foundation; Duke Energy; The Rotary Club of Durham, North Carolina (Durham Rotary Club); and the DPAC sponsored the event.
Hundreds of talented students from schools across the district were featured in “An Evening of Entertainment,” a fundraiser for the DPS Scholarship Foundation.
The performance showcased choral students from Durham Public Schools performing a wide genre of music - from Broadway show tunes like “Luck Be A Lady” (from Guys and Dolls) and “Solla Sollew” (from Seussical the Musical) to North Carolinian James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain” and “Waka Waka” (This Time for Africa) the official 2010 World Cup Soccer song! The show included both choral and choreographed numbers. This was the 32nd year of this event.
Special guest participants included vocal clinician Susan Klebanow, music professor at UNC-Chapel Hill, and choreographer Michael Barriskill, former Broadway performer and owner of Barriskill Dance Theatre in Durham. Together with locally based freelance choreographer Annette Layman they worked to prepare students for the fundraiser. This event was designed to not only showcase the talent that can be found in Durham Public Schools, but also to raise support for scholarships for graduating DPS seniors.
