Remembering 9/11 in Durham Public Schools
Students at Shepard Middle School got the chance to hear first hand from Retired NYPD Sergeant Robert Young what it was like at Ground Zero on September 11th, 2001. Robert Young worked at Ground Zero for 3 weeks in the post 9/11 recovery efforts. He went on to be a part of the NYPD Counter-Terrorism Division. He is now retired and resides in North Carolina. He came to Shepard as a part of their “First Fridays” assembly series to speak to the students about his experiences.
At Mangum Elementary students gathered on their field in honor of September 11th. They wore red, white and blue & held up poster boards to make a giant American flag. An aerial photo was captured of the flag - This photo will be sold to parents and the money raised will be given to the local fire department.
At Little River Elementary 1st & 2nd graders participated in a program called “I Will”. The mission of the program is to provide a forward looking way for Americans to forever honor and remember the victims, survivors, and the many that rose in service in response to the 9/11 tragedy. The students wrote thank you letters, made baskets and provided snacks to their local fire department. The students went to the fire department to deliver the baskets in person.
