<p><em><strong>Beyond Our Walls</strong></em><br /><br />DPS Channel 4 presents a new series, “Beyond Our Walls,” that will feature Durham Public Schools students and employees doing extraordinary things outside the classroom.<br /><br />The first installment of “Beyond Our Walls” features Riverside High School senior Alex Meliones, who will graduate a semester early next week. Alex received a $10,000 grant for a project to improve communications among parents of hospitalized children and the staff members who are caring for them. <br /><br />Alex, whose father is director of pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center, noticed that parents who were visiting their children often were challenged to learn of what treatments had transpired throughout the day. So she created the “Alex the Communication Buddy System,” a chart for medical professionals and visitors to sign off on throughout the course of the day to keep parents informed. <br /><br />DPS is proud of the talented, creative and thoughtful students and staff employees who do great things, “Beyond Our Walls.” If you know of a DPS student or staff member doing something great outside the classroom and who could be featured in this new series, please submit details to Michael Yarbrough, Communications Coordinator, michael.yarbrough@dpsnc.net.</p>
