4340 -SCHOOL UNIFORMS

The Board of Education will authorize schools to implement programs in which students are required to wear uniforms to school during the regular school day. The wearing of school uniforms should allow students to focus on instructional objectives of the school, favorably impact student attitude, promote harmony among students, and enhance the image of the school

Wearing or displaying items that contribute to disruption or interfere with the discipline or the rights of others is prohibited. If the school wishes to implement a program in which students are required to wear uniforms at school, the principal and staff will work with the site-based decision-making committee in developing a local school plan. The plan must address the following: 1. Educational value of the uniforms.

2. A communication plan which includes a minimum of 2 community forums.

3. Individual schools shall determine the uniform their students will wear.

4. School officials must insure that the language used in the plan is clear and easy to understand including specifications of all articles of clothing and footwear involved. This should minimally include type, cost, and color.

5. Provisions will be made for uniform accessibility for all students. Uniforms shall be of reasonable cost. No student shall be denied uniforms based on inability to pay. Financial arrangements must be addressed in the plan for families who cannot afford to purchase uniforms for their children.

6. Involvement of parents in the implementation of the plan.

7. Enforcement of the plan including consequences and procedures for failure to wear uniforms.

8. Parents will be surveyed to determine if they are in favor of students wearing uniforms at the school.

9. Students will be surveyed in order to assess their support and concerns. If at least 50% of the parent surveys are returned and 80% of those are in favor of uniforms, the plan will be submitted to the Superintendent for approval.
