3410 -SERVICES FOR ACADEMICALLY OR INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED STUDENTS

The school administration shall develop a plan to identify each academically or intellectually gifted (AIG) student attending the Durham Public Schools and to provide appropriate educational services to such students. The plan shall be presented to the Board for review and approval. Each plan approved by the Board shall remain in place for a maximum of three years. The administration shall be responsible for presenting new or revised plans to the Board.

3410.1 The administration shall include parents/guardians, members of the school community, community representatives, and other appropriate persons in developing the plan.

3410.2 The plan shall include the following components: Screening, identification, and placement procedures that allow for the identification of specific educational needs and for the assignment of AIG students to appropriate services. A clear statement of the program to be offered that includes different types of services provided in a variety of settings to meet the diversity of identified AIG students. Measurable objectives for the various services that align with core curriculum and a method to evaluate the plan and the services offered. The evaluation shall focus on improved student performance. Professional development clearly matched to the goals and objectives of the plan, the needs of the staff providing services to AIG students, the services offered, and the curricular modifications. A plan to involve the school community, parents/guardians, and representatives of the local community in the ongoing implementation of the plan, monitoring of the plan, and integration of services for AIG students into the overall school program. A procedure to resolve disagreement between parents/guardians and the Durham Public Schools when a child is not identified as AIG or concerning the appropriateness of services offered to the an AIG student.

3410.3 Any plan developed or revised and approved by the Board under this policy shall be submitted to the State Board of Education for comments before implementation.
