3000 -CURRICULUM ALIGNMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY AND ASSESSMENT

Durham Public Schools' framework for curriculum alignment and accountability will provide firm direction for the curriculum as programs change and evolve and personnel change. This framework will ensure quality control over the district's curriculum while providing for the flexibility to adapt to new state mandates and local adjustments made based on changing student needs, abilities and interests.

3000.1 Curriculum Alignment and Accountability

The Durham Public Schools shall have a well developed, articulated and coordinated curriculum that is effectively monitored by the administrative and teaching staffs. These curriculum documents will be based on the North Carolina Standard Course of Study and will reflect a sequential progression of knowledge and skills throughout the K-12 program. Development of the district curriculum documents shall be a collaborative effort between central services and classroom teachers. School-level administrators will monitor the delivery of the curriculum to ensure that all students are being taught the district's curriculum. Alignment and implementation of the curriculum shall be the responsibility of the classroom teacher with support from central services and school-level administrators. The goal is for learning to occur for all students on a daily basis.

3000.2 Curriculum Assessment and Program Quality

A large part of the curriculum is assessed annually by the State Testing Program. However, there shall be regular assessment of curricular programs not included in the State Testing Program. This shall be a collaborative process (central service and school-level instructional personnel and the staff of Research, Development and Accountability) that shall be used to determine whether a program is continued, discontinued or revamped and strengthened. Site-Based Decision-Making Committees may also request evaluation of programs that are specific to their schools.

New programs shall have an evaluation component in place prior to implementation.
