Durham Public Schools' framework for curriculum alignment and accountability will provide firm direction for the curriculum as programs change and evolve and personnel change.

Durham Public Schools is committed to providing an environment that enhances the development of lifelong wellness practices and ensures that all students are fit, healthy and ready to learn.

United States and North Carolina flags that are donated or otherwise available shall be displayed in each classroom.

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education recognizes that electronic resources of all types are becoming a vital part of an up-to-date education for our students whom we are preparing to become technologically literate citizens.

The principal must approve any use of movies or videos, unless the movie or video is maintained in the school library.

Page 3050 -FIELD TRIPS

The Board of Education and its staff recognize that field trips can be used as effective teaching experiences at all grade levels.

Page 3055 -CLASSROOM INTERRUPTIONS

Principals shall enact guidelines that will ensure protection of instructional time and keep interruptions to an absolute minimum.

Page 3060 -COPYRIGHT

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education recognizes that federal copyright laws (U.S. Code, Title 17) exist to protect the rights of copyright holders.

Page 3065 -STUDENT FEES

The Board of Education wishes to the fullest extent practical to offer its instructional programs without charging fees.

Page 3070 -SPEAKERS

All speakers in a school, for a club, a class, or any assembled group of students must be approved in advance by the school principal.

Page 3100 -SCHOOL CALENDAR/SCHOOL DAY

The Superintendent shall recommend and the Board shall adopt a school calendar by May 1 before the start of each school year.

Page 3105 -EMERGENCY CLOSINGS

The Superintendent shall be responsible for making provisions for and administering procedures for the temporary closing of a school or schools.

Page 3200 -GRADING SYSTEM

The policy of the Board of Education is to strive for a consistent and just evaluation of each student in the Durham Public Schools.

Page 3205 -REPORT CARDS

Teachers shall keep parents/guardians informed of student progress at school.

Page 3210 -INTERIM PROGRESS REPORTS

Parental involvement is essential in providing quality instruction for all students.

Page 3215 -CLASS RANKING

There shall be periodic compilations of class rankings in senior high schools for the purpose of making an individual student's class rank available to the student, his parent/guardian, and to colleges and other institutions, at the request of the student or his parent/guardian.

Page 3220 -TEST ADMINISTRATION

All testing personnel, teachers and school administrators are required to be familiar with the Testing Code of Ethics regarding the statewide testing program and to adhere to it in all aspects of the testing program.

The Board of Education believes that students must be assessed for the purpose of student academic assignment and recognizes the wide range of variables that must be considered in this process: student abilities, maturity, parental support, and motivation.

Durham Public Schools students in 3rd, 5th and 8th grade must meet local promotion and attendance standards for promotion to the next grade.

The Board of Education encourages a rigorous and fair standard for student performance.

Page 3300 -STUDENT ACCESS TO HIGH SCHOOL COURSES

The Board of Education offers a variety of high school courses as listed and described in the annual publication High School Programs of Studies.

Page 3305 -ADVANCED COLLEGE PLACEMENT

To meet the academic needs of high school students, principals are encouraged to permit students to take college courses while they are enrolled in high school.

Page 3310 -RELEASE OF STUDENTS TO ATTEND COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Board of Education encourages students to complete high school before seeking admission to a university, college or community college.

Page 3315 -SUMMER SCHOOL PROGRAMS

The Board of Education may provide summer school programs at all grade levels, both for enrichment and remediation.

Page 3320 -SINGLE COURSE ENROLLMENT

Under limited circumstances, the Superintendent or designee may permit high school students who withdraw from the Durham Public Schools to complete one course in which the student already is enrolled.

Page 3400 -SERVICES FOR EXCEPTIONAL CHILDREN UNDER THE INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES EDUCATION ACT

A free appropriate publicly supported education will be provided, in the least restrictive appropriate environment, to every disabled child with special needs ages three (3) through twenty (20).

Page 3405 -SERVICES FOR HANDICAPPED STUDENTS UNDER SECTION 504 OF THE REHABILITATION ACT

No child will be excluded from any educational program or be subject to discrimination because he is an "individual with a handicap," as the term is defined in The Rehabilitation Act of 1973.

Page 3410 -SERVICES FOR ACADEMICALLY OR INTELLECTUALLY GIFTED STUDENTS

The school administration shall develop a plan to identify each academically or intellectually gifted (AIG) student attending the Durham Public Schools and to provide appropriate educational services to such students.

Page 3500 -PARTICIPATION IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Participation in extracurricular school activities is a privilege, not a right.

Page 3505 -INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS

All interscholastic athletic activities will be conducted in accordance with State Board of Education policies and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association rules and regulations.

Page 3510 -STUDENT-INITIATED, NONCURRICULUM-RELATED STUDENT GROUPS

Student-initiated, noncurriculum-related student groups shall be permitted to conduct voluntary meetings on school grounds.
