2015 -PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN TITLE I PROGRAMS
Policy 2015: PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN TITLE I SCHOOLS
In accordance with federal law, Durham Public Schools will:
A. Involve parents/guardians in the development of the LEA Title I Plan by using the Site-Based Decision Making Teams at Title I schools and providing each school's PTA with opportunities for review of the plan.
B. Provide the coordination, materials, facilities and other support to assist schools in the planning and implementing of effective parent involvement activities that are designed to improve student achievement and school performance.
C. Build capacity for strong parental involvement by: Assisting parents/guardians in understanding national, state and local standards through school and community meetings with information translated into dual languages. Insuring that all communications are in an easy to understand formal for all parents/guardians. Providing support based on reasonable parent/guardian requests. Providing access for parent/school teams to constitute the membership of an active systemwide Parent Advisory Council. Providing materials and information to parents/guardians to help them assist in their child's education. Working with school staffs to insure all school personnel understand the value of parental involvement.
D. Coordinate and integrate all parental involvement strategies in Durham Public Schools. Collaboration and integration of external and internal resources and services such as those provided by colleges, universities or other programs, will further support efforts to involve families in the support of their students.
E. Conduct an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of the Parent Involvement program in Durham Public Schools through an annual Title I survey.
F. Ensure that parents/guardians are involved in the schools' activities including being a part of each school's site-based leadership team.
Each Title I school shall jointly develop with and distribute to parents/guardians a written parent/guardian involvement plan. The plan must address how the school will involve parents/guardians in a timely and organized way in the planning and improvement of Title I-supported activities. Plans should address involvement of parents/guardians in planning and improvement of Title I activities, and provide for distribution to parents/guardians of information on expected student proficiency levels, the school's academic performance.
