The Office of Public Affairs provides internal and external communications for Durham Public Schools. This office is the primary contact for the news media, newcomers, and anyone with questions about the schools. Public Affairs coordinates the District Web site, DPS Cable Channel 4, selected recognition events and other activities for the district. Employee, parent and community newsletters, along with a number of external outreach efforts also are key functions of this office.

Website redesign: The Office of Public Affairs has just completed a major redesign of the District’s Web site.

Programs

  • Staff Appreciation Awards – coordinate with Human Resources to recognize employees for outstanding customer service, quarterly.
  • RecognitionPublic Affairs coordinates recognition activities for DPS administrative assistants during Administrative Professionals Week, for National Board Certified Teachers, for staff appreciation award winners, for students in middle and high schools who make all A’s, and for other special recognitions.
  • All-Star Customer Service –a program that includes standards, training, reviews and recognition to encourage improved customer service.
  • Parent Academy- workshops for parents to provide them with skills and knowledge they can use to be more effective parents.
  • Celebrations at Board of Education Meetings – recognize DPS staff and students at board meetings for their accomplishments.
  • Parent Information Hotline – a toll-free telephone number for parents to call to learn about DPS activities.
  • Choice Fair/Showcase of Schools campaign to inform parents of DPS choices and invite parents in for school tours.
  • Ready, Set, Go to High School –  high school options fair for middle school parents to learn about DPS high schools.
  • Cable TV Channel – programming for Cable TV 4 including video segments and calendar items.
  • Holiday Giving – DPS Central Services' giving to the Food Bank of NC.
  • National Board Certification Dinner – DPS recognition of teachers who have earned National Board Certification.
  • American Education Week – DPS activities to commemorate this special week.
  • Customer Service Training – co-sponsored with Human Resources to provide training for DPS office assistants.
  • Media Training for Principals – train principals to work with the news media.
  • Teacher Appreciation Week – recognition that is coordinated with Human Resources to recognize DPS teachers.
  • Administrative Professionals’ Reception – held to honor DPS administrative professionals.
  • Employee Discount Card – cards that allow DPS employees to have discounts at area businesses.
  • Parent Information Hotline – a toll-free telephone number for parents to call to learn about DPS activities
