Substitute Teaching for Durham Public Schools

Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher in Durham Public Schools.

Effective May 2, 2011, Durham Public Schools requires that anyone interested in becoming a substitute teacher that does not have a teaching license or proof of 36 college credit hours must complete “Effective Substitute Teacher Training” prior to becoming a substitute teacher. This training is offered through Durham Technical Community College at various intervals throughout the year.  You can contact Pam Gladson at 919-536-7239, ext 4301 to get more information regarding this class.

Durham Public Schools Human Resource Services will accept a certificate from Durham Technical Community College as proof of successful completion of the program.  If you have a teaching certificate whether current or expired, you may submit this in lieu of the Effective Substitute Teacher Training.

Substitute Teacher Requirements:

  1. Online-Application for Employment: www.dpsnc.net/jobs
  2. Proof of Teaching License, Effective Substitute Teacher Training or transcripts showing thirty-six (36) college credit hours.
  3. Two (2) confidential professional references*
  4. Health Form which includes TB Test Results*
  5. Must have cleared Criminal Background Check*

Effective Substitute Teacher Training Classes

Offered at Durham Technical Community College.  Dates for future classes to be announced.

The Application Process

  1. Complete the on-line employment application.
  2. Drop off copy of teaching license, Effective Substitute Teacher Training certificate or transcripts showing thirty-six (36) college credit hours and completed Durham Public Schools Criminal Background Check form to Durham Public Schools, Human Resource Services reception desk.
  3. Upon receipt of license, certificate or transcripts and cleared background check, you will be scheduled to attend Substitute Teacher Orientation.

Pay Rates:

  • $91/day – Licensed substitutes (Holds or ever held a teaching license)
  • $70/day – Non-licensed substitutes
