Educational Technology

 

The Educational Technology Division assists teachers in using technology to create effective teaching practices and methods of engagement. Our department is committed to transforming educational practices that will foster engagement among students and increase student achievement. We provide instructional software application to improve academic growth and professional development workshops for Durham Public Schools teachers.

  • Summer “Tech Trekers” Camp for Students (Elementary Schools)
  • 8th Grade Computer Skills Test
  • 4th Grade Computer Skills Test

IBM/Durham Public School Initiatives

Durham Public Schools is part of the IBM’s Reinventing Education program which has provided support for our technology integration and professional development programs.

National Black Family Technology Awareness Week

This program allows students and parents to participate in a week long program to help bring awareness and appreciation of technology in schools and careers.

Exite/Ignite Camps

These are offered by IBM to allow students from Durham Public Schools to work on engaging projects in a collaborative team environment.

MentorPlace

This program pairs students with IBM employees who serve as mentors. Students work online with their mentors on project based learning activities.

La Familia Technology Week

Helps bring awareness to the value of technology in education and career preparation to Hispanic families.

Kidsmart Program

This will furnish computer workstations through the United Way Teaming for Technology. The workstations are encased in Little Tikes furniture with Young Explorers software for pre-K, Kindergarten and First grade students. The software is from the Riverdeep Interactive Learning Company and is aligned with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (NCSCOC).

Publications

  • Clicks!—monthly employee newsletter that is produced in electronic format
  • Instructional Technology Handbook—provides teachers with technology training, resources, whom to call and technology planning
  • Approved Software List—provides school with applications that are aligned with the NCSCOS and compatible with our network
  • Technology Plan – 5 year educational technology plan for the district
